Our Beginning

¡Chévere! was founded in 2018 by Dr. Roberto Abreu! Under the guidance of Dr. Abreu, ¡Chévere! lab members seek to serve and liberate oppressed communities through research, mentorship, teaching, and advocacy.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Our research explores ways in which marginalized communities resist systemic oppression and promote bienestar colectivo (collective well-being), with a particular focus on Latinx communities, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) and gender nonbinary individuals, and the intersection of Latinx and LGBTQ and gender nonbinary individuals and communities.

Our Mission

¡Chévere!’s main mission is to enhance the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, people of Color and Indigenous people (POCI), and those who self-identify at the intersection of LGBTQ and POCI identities. At its core, ¡Chévere! explores how communities of Color use cultural values and beliefs to navigate relations, embrace, and celebrate their LGBTQ members.

Get Involved

At its core, our work is guided by counseling psychology values such as social justice, person-environment interactions, growth, resilience, and resistance. A significant portion of our research uses advanced qualitative methodologies to explore the experiences of marginalized communities for which existing measures do not accurately capture their experiences.
